Antelope and Parker Pitted
In North - South Grid Clash

By John Lindblom
Sports Editor

An inter-county north-south clash between the Antelope Rams and the Parker Broncos at Antelope Friday night is expected to result in one of the most exciting grid contest of the year for Yuma County.

Both teams will take 3-2 records into the Class B Conference game and both coaches predict that the final score for the came won't be more that one or two points different.

Individually, battle pit the speed and drive of 190-pound Parker right halfback Augie Fisher against the aerial attack of Antelope's Tommy "Golden Arm" Miller.

Fisher was an all-state representative from Parker last year and his coach, Chuck O'Hagan predicts that nothing should stop the senior ground-gainer from the same honor this year.

Miller, on the other hand, probably would have been and all-stater in 1957, but the fact that antelope had just made the jump from six-man to 11-man football hampered his chances. But, like O'Hagan Miller's coach Chuck Ferguson. expects his ace passer to claim that honor at the finale of the "58 season."

Over all the clash figures to be a defensive battle, since both teams posses an extraordinary amount of defensive talent.

For the Broncos, Junior halfback John Hart, who has, surprisingly enough, led the scoring with 29 points and number two defensive man, linebacker Carl Roland, who has scored 28 points, will lead the attack and pose a threat to Miller's pass attack.

Hart, as well as being the Broncos defensive leader, is also a find punt returner and Parker's number one extra point kicker. Roland fills in as Parker's number two extra point man.

For Antelope, Speedy Sandy Beecroft, a demon on pass interception and 240 pound senior linebacker George Headway, the man that no back runs within five feet of survives to go farther, hold down the hopes.

Despite the heft of Headway, Parker will have a definite weight advantage in the line. Antelope's stalwarts average out to 164 pounds per man, Parker 172. Heaviest man for either offensive wall, however, is right tackle Charley Rider at 191.

Leading the Bronco stalwarts is 172 pound senior captain Don Martin at right guard and 165 pound senior co-captain Bill Ripburger at right tackle. Martin is consider to be the finest blocking guard in the entire B West conference.

How ever, the Rams claim one of the finest ends in the conference in senior Mickey Thomas, who makes up the receiving end of Miller's pass attack.

Both coaches, Ferguson and O'Hagan have pronounced fear of the other squad.

Said O'Hagan "We're afraid of Antelope because it has come up with a well balance squad, which features a good tough line and team speed as good as we have. We're respectful of Miller's passing ability too."

"We're a little afraid of Parker too," Ferguson commented. The Antelope coach, who admits that his squad has shown up better than he had anticipated, said that he felt the two teams are "even."

Both team operate from a regular T offense.

Parker, which has lost only to Needles, a class A school and to top team in the conference Gilbert, brings it 2-1 record in conference play. Antelope, which has lost to class A Seton Catholic and powerful Phoenix Christian has a 0-1 record in conference play.

Thomas Leads Rams to 12 - 10 Win Over Parker

Right end Mickey Thomas led an Antelope uprising in the final three minutes of a game played at Antelope Friday night, scoring two touchdowns and giving the Rams a 12-10 victory over Parker.

But the man that Antelope had most to thank is the victory was right guard Murr Brown, who caught Bronco left halfback Dale Haggard on the one yard line at the final gun after the fleet footed back and taken a 45 yard desperation pass from right halfback Augie Fisher and threatened to go all the way. But Brown with a sensational burst of speed pulled down the halfback from behind to preserve the Ram victory.

Thomas scored the first of his two markers with three minutes left in the fourth stanza when Tommy Miller's fourth down aerial from the 11 and stepped into the end zone. The play culminate an 80 yard drive that started on the first play of the quarter and took 15 plays to complete.

Hopes Fleeting

With hopes fleeting for Antelope in the deepening shadows of the game, Thomas brought the entire crowd to its feet, when he intercepted a Bronco pass on his own 43 and dashed 57 yards to give the Rams a two point margin with but a minute, 15 seconds left to play.

Seconds later Parker began its push from its own 37 after taking the Antelope kickoff and Haggard made his astounding catch. But Brown clinched the game for the Rams with his just as amassing come from behind tackle.

Parker scored three of its point on a two yard field goal from a difficult angle off the boot of Carl Roland with six minutes elapsed in the first period. The three pointer culminated a 41 yard drive which was stopped after the Broncos had gained a first down on the Rams five.

Parker Scores Again

Parker scored again with four minutes remaining in the second quarter on a 10 yard pass from John Hart to right end Sam Blake. The play climaxed a suspended drive from the 23 that took 12 plays to pay off.

The north-south inter-county counties proved to be as closely fought and rugged as pre game forecasts had pegged ti to be. On hundred yard in penalties were assessed against the two teams, 55 for the Rams and the other 45 for Parker. Most of the penalties were 15 yarders.

The Broncos, using power plays and highly clever pass patterns, dominated play through the first three quarters of the game, allowing Antelope to roll to only three-first downs during the entire period.

First Three Points

Parker, meanwhile, threatened as far as the Antelope 31 in early moment of the game and finally to the two later in the first period, where it picked it first three points.

Late in the second stanza the Northern County men threatened inside the Antelope 10 twice, but was able to capitalize only once. In the final minutes of the quarter, the Broncos gained all the way to the Ram six after a punt return from the midstripe by Haggard. But the Rams stalwart George Headway pounced on a Parker fumble on first down to give Antelope new legs just before the half. Through the entire first half Antelope was unable to move to with the Parker 35.

Parker Threatened as far as the Antelope 21 in the early moments of the third period. However, here again Brow ended the threat by intercepting a pass on his own five.

Seconds later Parker threatened on the Antelope 12, but a penalty put the Broncos back to the 27, where a fourth down field goal attempt fail.

Only in the final period did Antelope come to life, keeping possession of the ball throughout most of the frame and rolling it precious two point victory.
